However, it is only now that we have been given details, albeit minimal, regarding the imminent release of their Windows-powered netbook.Ò By doing so, it will cross the divide between two seemingly different, yet exceedingly converging industries. Over the past few quarters, the Finland-based manufacturer has been losing steam in terms of profit margins. However, this could probably be explained by the fact that the actual demand for mobiles has considerably dropped. This is why a lot of critics are saying that entering the cutthroat world of PC"s might hurt the company more than they could benefit from it. Nonetheless, the company is still looking upbeat and have nothing but positive expectations in their imminent border crossing.
The company"s head of the entire mobile phone unit, Kai Oistamo, even says that they "are fully aware what has the margin level been in the PC world. We have gone into this with our eyes wide open. There"s really an opportunity to bring fresh perspective to the PC world."
What"s In the Horizon
According to experts, there is a 127% expected increase in the shipments of netbooks for this year. This means that we are looking at well over 26 million units changing hands throughout the world. In fact, this numbers are even outperforming both the PC market, which will remain flat, and the mobile phone market which is even expected to lose up to 10 points.
With such a big opportunity in the market, the mobile manufacturing mogul is more than willing to pounce. However, this also means that in order to shine, their netbook will have to stand out in one way or another. There are already hundreds of different models in the market and this netbook will have to be nothing short of amazing if it hopes to catch the eye of consumers.
Name and Numbers
Two things going for Nokia is their brand and their extensive knowledge in the world of cellular technology. If they wish to do well in the PC industry, they will have to ensure that these two elements will be used to their fullest. They"ve already built their reputation over the past few years and have undeniably established themselves as a household name.
However, this can only be said for the world of mobile phones. Now that they are entering an entirely new market, they will have to take all the knowledge and experience they have gained in the past in order to come up with a device that will have the ability to bring out a surprise or two for a market that has pretty much seen it all.
